Sacrificial Braces for Earthquake Design Bring Many Benefits

Engineers in earthquake-prone areas have dedicated entire careers to developing earthquake-resistant design techniques. In many parts of the world, however, there are buildings that predate the modern design standards. Researchers in Scotland have developed a new steel frame design that could be used on existing structures and, once installed, allow for easier, faster repair when damage does occur.
